Washington, D.C. β Today, the Washington Association of Black Journalists announced that Doxie McCoy, public information officer with the Office of the People’s Counsel for the District of Columbia, is the 2025 recipient of the WABJ President’s Award. This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to journalism, communications, and the community.
McCoy, a seasoned communications professional and trailblazer, will be honored at the WABJ 4th Annual Special Honors & Scholarship Gala on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. Tickets for the gala can be purchased here.
McCoy serves as Public Information Officer with the Office of the People’s Counsel and has produced award-winning publications and the “OPC Radio Connect Podcast.” Previously, she served as Director of Communications for DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and former DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray. As a BET News reporter, anchor, and producer, she won two NAACP Image Awards as supervising producer of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley.
A Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism graduate, McCoy was the first Black female field and ice hockey player at Boston College. She received the 2021 ACC inaugural “UNITE Award” for impact in racial and social justice.

“Doxie McCoy’s remarkable career spans journalism, government communications, and groundbreaking achievements in sports,” said WABJ President Phil Lewis. “As a trailblazer who broke barriers, Doxie exemplifies excellence and perseverance.”
The awards gala supports WABJ scholarships, professional development programming, and the Urban Journalism Workshop, now in its 39th year.
