WHUR: The Next Generation of Black Journalists

Washington Association of Black Journalists President Phil Lewis, Urban Journalism Workshop (UJW) co-coordinator Denise Douglas and former UJW participating and Syracuse University freshman Sheridan Lee joined Harold Fisher of WHUR’s The Daily Drum to discuss the future of journalism.

“As diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are being dismantled and journalists are increasingly labeled “fake news,” questions are growing about who gets to tell our stories—and who is trusted to tell them. For more than 40 years, The Washington Association of Black Journalists’ Urban Journalism Workshop has trained young reporters, not as a public relations exercise, but as a response to long-standing barriers in the industry. We’re taking a look at the program and why it is still very much needed, four decades later. We’ll also share details on why they are looking for a few more journalists to put in the pipeline.”
